We Techies Are Wining Pussies – or just lucky?

From M: "I just spent 3 days with some pretty serious people and learned a ton. I love the internet, fuck being a farmer is hard and the rest is bullshit =) can you imagine waiting 3 years to discover if your strategy was the right one?"
An email this morning from my friend Matias – made me feel stupid.
During 2009 – I have felt some self petty and I have been thinking that life was hard – but imagine if I was into real old school business – like farming (where we all came from – and yes my grandfather has a medium sized farm until early 1970′ies). But fuck me – and all the spoiled kids in the tech world. Its hard but NOT THIS HARD – as in farming where:
- Product cycles are 3-4 years
- Weather can kill all
- Its hard physical work
- Capital requirements are insane
- Lots of heritage
- Lots of environmental trouble
I feel humble that I can work in a sector where the screen always lets me work when and where I want to – mostly with whom I want to. And the fact that 99% of all offices are nice and warm. Well then there is the hardcore sales (the big secret of tech success) – where one have to aggressively show the vision and product (even very early stage) to endless amounts of clients and investors – but but but – the always offer you coffee and they are seldom rude.
Dear tech entrepreneur og colleagues out the – let be humble and proud and happy to be here in evolution.
Happpy Neew Year.

Hi ML,
im a student hoping to grasp just some of what youve accomplished and have been following your tweets for a little time now after meeting you in early 2009.
This comment i didnt understand…”fuck me – and all the spoiled kids in the tech world” … as i want to believe that we suffer the same hardships as farming.
*Short spanning product cycles – we lack the luxury of farmers foresight… the main ingredient of the Great British Sunday roast will always be roast beef no matter how many years pass.
*Rough economic weather (even if it is just all BS)
*Over saturated markets – with so many of us ‘Teckys’ and ever changing platforms upon which to compete its becoming harder to differentiate ‘Status Quo’ Tom, ‘Got no life’ Dick and ‘Superstar’ Harry…
*No Heritage
*Lots of Environmental Trouble
Now im not criticizing your thoughts, but as a young boy i was brought up to appreciate the ideals of hard work and patience; and that farmers are under appreciated providers to our society. As much as this world is now a fast paced one i most certainly believe that the lost ideals of the humble farmer are integral to business process today and try to apply them wherever possible.
im trying to say, to the outside population and the successful club being a tecky isnt hard, to those of us still fathoming the scope of available opportunity its like trying to decide if you want a large cattle ranch or an exclusive organic orchard.

Damn right – we’re a lucky bunch – compared to so many other hardworking sweating sectors

Morten, Fantastic post…and I know I should be working instead of reading your blog, But I agree humility is key. Here in Mallorca, well there is always someone with a bigger yacht. And even at the Informatics Olympics, there is someone who has 3 gold medals if you have 2. Ambition is good, but being the Most, or the Best is always temporary. Better to have something to fall back on when your record is broken – like a sense of accomplishment, or a family, or friends, or all of the above.
I feel soooooooo lucky to have essentially “skipped” the GEC (Global Economic Crisis), no period of unemployment, home forclosure or car repossessions (of course, I don’t have car, but you get my drift.)

I’m definitely considering myself lucky to be a techy. Can’t think of any other field where you can make so much impact in so little time. :)

[...] My man Morten Lund called the crisis last year a financial tsunami but he also pointed out recently that we, the digital entrepreneurs, are blessed with quick results, good working conditions and manageable financial needs. Read it all here. [...]
